The rape rate was so bad that young girls would slit their wrists so they wouldn’t be raped. In the book German Boy, Wolfgang Samuel writes about his experiences in post-war Germany and writes that he watched this happen while he and his family were trying to reach West Germany. It’s a great book if you’re interested in learning about post- war Europe, but beware that rape occurs frequently in that book. Hungarians were also subjected to mass rape at Soviet hands. Polish were raped and quite a few Polish rape victims were survivors of the concentration camps. Soviets caused about as much pain and suffering as the Nazis.
The Imperial Japanese troops in Nanking come pretty close to this. Pretty much every aspect of WWII is just astonishingly horrible.
Maybe they do it because who’s going to stop them? The other civilians? They’d either be shot or raped, or both. The other Soviets? They probably did it too, and didn’t care much. The generals? If they got rid of the rapists, their army could shrink drastically. Rape has been happening for millennia, that doesn’t make it right, it makes it a horrible tradition. A tradition that might last forever. People aren’t born with violent thoughts, they learn them somewhere, whether they’re 2 or 22. And it’s an awful truth, but it’s better than being lied to about it. When you’re lied to about it, that makes it easier to sweep it under the rug and forget it. And it seems like things aren’t getting better in that sense. We’re becoming desensitized to this violence, and that’s making things more dangerous.
